The Royals Season 2 is undergoing another major change behind the camera. Director Jasmeet K Reen has reportedly exited the Netflix series after just three days of filming, with Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar co-director Mitakshara Kumar stepping in to take over the project.
The development comes months after the makers confirmed that Season 2 would move in a different creative direction, including a change in the show’s cast. The second season is currently in production and is expected to bring back several familiar faces alongside new additions.
Jasmeet K Reen Reportedly Exits The Royals Season 2
According to a report by Variety India, Jasmeet K Reen left The Royals Season 2 after three days of shooting. The report attributed her departure to creative differences with producer Rangita Nandy and said production was temporarily halted while the team dealt with the change.
A source cited in the report claimed that there were differences concerning the scripting and execution of the series. However, a later report by The Times of India stated that reports of a clash between Reen and Nandy were incorrect.
In a joint statement, Reen and Pritish Nandy Communications reportedly described the departure as a mutual decision and indicated that production would continue as planned.
Mitakshara Kumar Takes Over as Director
Following Reen’s exit, Mitakshara Kumar has reportedly been brought in to direct the second season.
Kumar has previously worked with filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali as an assistant director on major productions including Bajirao Mastani, Padmaavat and Gangubai Kathiawadi. She later took on a larger directorial role in Bhansali’s Netflix series Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, where she co-directed episodes.
Her experience with large-scale period and ensemble productions makes her the latest creative force to join the changing The Royals team.
Production Reportedly Continues Without a Major Delay
Despite the change in director, the production is reportedly moving forward without a significant loss of shooting time.
A source quoted by Variety India said Kumar stepped in quickly enough to prevent a prolonged disruption to the schedule. The report suggested that the production team was able to continue without losing substantial working hours.
The development is significant for the Netflix series because the second season is already undergoing several creative changes ahead of its eventual release.
Ishaan Khatter Returns as Maharaj Aviraaj Singh
Ishaan Khatter remains one of the central returning stars of The Royals Season 2. The actor recently gave fans a glimpse of his return to the show’s world by sharing a series of behind-the-scenes photographs from the new production.
Khatter is set to reprise his role as Maharaj Aviraaj “Fizzy” Singh. In his Instagram post, the actor wrote, “Lock in. Log out. See y’all on the other side,” teasing his return to the Netflix series.
Nora Fatehi is also officially returning for the second season.
Who Is Joining The Royals Season 2?
The new season is expected to expand the show’s ensemble with several fresh faces.
Gurfateh Pirzada and Sini Shetty have been announced as new additions to the cast. Meanwhile, Sakshi Tanwar, Zeenat Aman, Vihaan Samat and Kavya Trehan are expected to return as members of the Singh family in Morpur.
The second season follows the first installment’s royal-family drama and contemporary romance storyline while taking the series in a new creative direction.
What Happened to Bhumi Pednekar?
Another significant change surrounding Season 2 was Bhumi Pednekar’s reported exit from the series.
Pednekar was part of the first season, but reports earlier this year indicated that she would not return for the second installment as the show underwent a creative shift.
Jasmeet K Reen was subsequently brought on board in May 2026 after Season 1 director Nupur Asthana was unable to return because of prior commitments. Reen’s reported departure after only three days of filming has now resulted in another change in the director’s chair.
When Will The Royals Season 2 Release?
The Royals Season 2 is currently in production. Based on the reports surrounding the project, the new season is expected to arrive on Netflix in late 2027, although an official release date has not been announced.
The first season premiered on Netflix on May 9, 2025, and consisted of eight episodes. The series was created by Rangita Pritish Nandy and Ishita Pritish Nandy, with the first season directed by Priyanka Ghose and Nupur Asthana.
With Mitakshara Kumar now reportedly taking over the director’s role, the second season enters another phase of production while retaining Ishaan Khatter and other returning members of the ensemble.
