Kunal Kemmu’s introduction to Soha Ali Khan’s family came with an amusing twist. Soha once revealed that her mother, veteran actor Sharmila Tagore, first met Kunal on the sets of 99, where he happened to be shooting a scene in a white bathrobe.
Kunal Kemmu and Soha Ali Khan have largely kept their personal lives away from constant public attention. However, an old interview from 2012 offers an interesting glimpse into how their relationship was introduced to their respective families.
Soha had earlier revealed that she was not comfortable telling her father, former Indian cricketer Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, about her relationship directly. Instead, she chose to confide in her mother, Sharmila Tagore, and relied on her to have the conversation with him.
Soha Ali Khan Relied on Sharmila Tagore to Tell Her Father
Speaking to Hindustan Times in an earlier interview, Soha explained that conversations about relationships were not something she normally had with her father.
“I would’ve never told my father directly because we didn’t have discussions about boys. I relied on my mother to tell him,” Soha recalled.
She described her mother as liberal and trusting of her choices, which made Sharmila the natural person to approach.
“I must’ve told her and she is very liberal and trusting of my choices and not overtly concerned,” Soha said.
But Sharmila’s first encounter with Kunal came in rather memorable circumstances.

Kunal Was Wearing a White Bathrobe When Sharmila Met Him
Soha revealed that Sharmila first met Kunal while he was working on 99. Unfortunately for the actor, his introduction to his future mother-in-law happened while he was filming a scene that required him to wear a bathrobe.
“She met Kunal on the sets of 99 and unfortunately he was doing a scene in which he had to wear a White bathrobe,” Soha said.
The unusual first meeting did not appear to create any lasting awkwardness. Sharmila soon became comfortable with Kunal, and the two eventually developed a warm relationship.
There was even an amusing domestic moment when Sharmila attempted to cook for him but needed Kunal’s help with something as basic as turning on the gas.

Sharmila Tagore and Kunal Kemmu Eventually Became Close
While Soha’s mother initially had no reason to expect that she and Kunal would become particularly close, their relationship developed naturally over time.
Kunal also found himself navigating a new experience on the other side of the relationship: telling his own parents that he was dating Soha.
By that point, the couple had reportedly been together for around eight or nine months. Kunal decided it was time to tell his parents after reports about their relationship began appearing in the media.

Kunal Kemmu Had Initially Denied Dating Reports
Kunal recalled that his parents had previously asked him about reports linking him to Soha, but he had denied them at the time.
The reason, he explained, was that the relationship had not yet been made official within their families. As more reports began appearing, however, he decided that it was better to tell his parents the truth.
The conversation was relatively casual, although his parents — particularly his father — were reportedly somewhat uncomfortable with the revelation.
For Kunal, it was also significant because it was the first time he had told his parents that he was in a relationship with a woman.

Kunal Kemmu and Soha Ali Khan’s Love Story Began on a Film Set
Although Kunal and Soha eventually shared the screen in 99, their first meeting actually took place earlier, on the sets of the 2009 film Dhoondte Reh Jaoge.
Their professional association eventually developed into a relationship, which they later made public. The couple married in 2015 and have since welcomed their daughter, Inaaya Naumi Kemmu.
Today, Kunal and Soha continue to balance their careers and family life, but Soha’s old account of their relationship offers a humorous reminder that even celebrity love stories can begin with an unexpectedly awkward first introduction.
